In the morning of June 3rd, the team of four from Gloryren arrived in Munich from Guangzhou. We checked in at the Andaz Munich Schwabinger Tor. Then we headed to the Downtown Campus of University Hospital of Munich (LMU Klinikum) right away to visit Prof. Tufman, Senior Physician of Medical Clinic and Polyclinic V (Pneumology) and Head of Thoracic Oncology. Prof. Tufman met us at the outpatient building in person and showed us around the Downtown Campus which has a history of more than 200 years. The Faculty of Medicine of LMU is one of the faculties established at the founding of the university and has been in existence for more than 550 years. At first, the Downtown Campus was known as the Municipal Hospital of Munich built outside the Old Town of Munich. It has been strictly protected by the German law on the Protection of Cultural Relics. An ancient church from the founding of the campus is still well preserved with cautious repair and renovation. It looks luxurious and vintage, with a towering pipe organ in it. Every year, prayers for deceased patients come out from the church. In the corridors and staircases stand the statues and hang the paintings of former presidents of the hospital. There is also a small fine garden where patients can get comforts physically and mentally in the campus. Prof. Tufman has worked as the secondary supervisor of Doctor LI from a well-known Chinese Grade Three Class A cancer hospital for her MD program since 2023. She made a research plan for Doctor LI herself. On that day, she also personally showed us the brand new laboratory where Doctor LI will be working in the next two years, and introduced us the cultivation plan of Doctor LI in detail. At 4:00 p.m. of June 4th, Prof. Behr, Director of Medical Clinic and Polyclinic V (Pneumology) of LMU Klinikum, hurried back from patient's ward to his office specially to meet us. Prof. Behr is a key academic leader on pneumology in Germany and even the whole world. Since he is the first supervisor of Doctor LI, he, together with Prof. Tufman, Head of Thoracic Oncology, made a detailed and practicable research plan for her. In May this year, Doctor LI has obtained the letter of acceptance for Doctor of Medicine from the University of Munich. And she will fly to Munich this September to start her 2-year MD study under the joint guidance of Prof. Behr and Prof. Tufman. Prof. Behr mentioned that over 70% of the medical students in Germany are female, but only a few of them can become a department director in university hospitals for all sorts of reasons. From this, he fully understands the situation of career development for female doctors, and hopes to see a more gender-equal medical field in Germany in the future. With his endeavor, the gender ratio in his department has now reached 1:1. Prof. Behr is concerned about Doctor LI's career development and has high expectations on her. And he hopes that Doctor LI could become an excellent pneumologist back to China after obtaining an MD degree in Germany.
