On October 20th, Prof. Bähr, a world renowned neurologist, visited Wuxi People’s Hospital for academic exchanges and started a week-long visiting professorship at its Neurological Diagnosis and Treatment Center. Prof. Bähr is the Director of the Department of Neurology at the University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG), the Founding Director of the Heart & Brain Center Göttingen (HBCG) of UMG, a member of German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities, and Royal College of Physicians. In the morning, a warm welcome ceremony was held at Wuxi People’s Hospital for Prof. Bähr. The hospital’s leadership team and the key members of the Neurological Diagnosis and Treatment Center attended the ceremony. GU Xiaofeng, President of Wuxi People’s Hospital, delivered a speech for the one-week academic exchange activities and they also specially showed a promotional video of Wuxi People’s Hospital for Prof. Bähr. Then, GAO Yufeng, Party Secretary of Wuxi People’s Hospital, gave a brief introduction of the hospital to Prof. Bähr. Prof. Bähr also introduced the University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG). The University of Göttingen and its Faculty of Medicine are globally renowned as a cradle of Nobel laureates, having cultivated 45 Nobel Prize winners to date. Founded in 1737 by King George II of England, the university has established a solid academic foundation, particularly in the field of biomedical research. As one of the two maximum-care providers within an 80-kilometer radius, serving a population of 3.2 million. The medical center currently has 130 professors, 3,700 students, and 7,900 staff members. Its annual care turnover amounts to 840 million euros, and it receives 640 million euros in the state funding and an additional 60 million euros as third-party research funding annually. At the end of the ceremony, Party Secretary GAO Yufeng prepared a special souvenir to Prof. Bähr, and both sides took group photos to mark the occasion. After the ceremony, accompanied by SHAO Junfei, Director of the Neurological Diagnosis and Treatment Center and other members, Prof. Bähr visited the Neurological Diagnosis and Treatment Center, the departments and wards of Neurology and Neurosurgery, the central laboratory, Wuxi Medical Center of Nanjing Medical University and other relevant facilities. Prof. Bähr also engaged in in-depth discussions with the hospital on topics such as patient monitoring in the stroke unit and the education and training of undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students. In the afternoon, Prof. SHAO Junfei gave a detailed introduction of the Neurological Diagnosis and Treatment Center to Prof. Bähr. Then, JI Wei, Assistant Director of the Center, presented a case report on cerebral venous sinus thrombosis. Accompanied by the host team members, Prof. Bähr visited the ward to conduct a bedside consultation and examination of the patient. Following the consultation, both sides had an in-depth discussion on the patient’s diagnosis and treatment plan. They also discussed the similarities and differences between China and Germany regarding the incidence, etiology, and treatment strategies of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, the discussion was characterized by a warm atmosphere, and all the participants had gained valuable inspiration and insights. Both sides expressed great expectation towards the upcoming academic exchanges, believing that they would be able to mutually learn from each other’s concepts and advanced experiences, and jointly promote the development of neurology between China and Germany.
