At 5:30 am on September 14, when the sky was turning bright. I headed to the Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport for a flight to Shanghai.In 2020, life was unpredictable. Not only are we in different cities, but also in different countries. We were separated by a six-hour time difference, nearly 10,000 kilometers, and a 12-hour flight...It has been 48 months since we last met the visiting professors participating in the Sino-Euro even. The last 1460 days have been the difficult times of our lives. Over the past four years, I have been always thinking that. We will definitely see each other again. I don't know when or where, but it must be a sunny day. It doesn't matter how much I want to see all of you, what matters most is how much you want to see me. Our reunion only makes sense only if you want to see me. On the afternoon of September 14, we picked up Prof. Stief, the Deputy Medical Director of the University Hospital of Munich, at the Shanghai Pudong International Airport. We enjoyed dinner at the Canton Table located at Bund 3 and Prof. Stief was very happy about that. He believes that house prices in Shanghai are absurd, which may cause many social problems in the future. The rich only hope for skyrocketing house prices so that they can maintain the value of their assets or make a big profit. This idea is a manifestation of childish ignorance, and it is absolutely very dangerous. If the house prices in Munich are too expensive, how can the nurses, security guards, and drivers at LMU afford the housing? What can they do? It is not enough for hospitals to have doctors alone. Nurses and other front-line employees are indispensable. This also reflects on the society - the functioning of a society relies on the ordinary people. We also talked about the corruption in healthcare system. Corruption is commonly seen in the healthcare system in Italy, France and Spain. But this is unseen and impossible at the University Hospital of Munich managed by Prof. Stief. The healthcare system in Germany was corrupted in the 1950s and 1960s. The system learned a lesson from the history and everyone in the system is aware that corruption leads to imprisonment. Therefore, there is no corruption in the healthcare system in Germany at all. Whenever dish is served, he always lets us eat first before he does. He always walks behind us. He pulls out the chairs for us at the restaurants. He did not answer a single phone call during the 3 days in China, but devoted himself to the Welcome Banquet of SEOS 2023 Global Press Conference and the Third Sino-Euro Global Forum on Hospital Management, Specialty Construction and Talent Cultivation. He didn't have time to eat at all throughout the whole banquet. He told me that he did not come to the banquet for a dinner, but for the hospitals and doctors in China. During the 3-hour forum, he was fully engaged, attentively listening to the speakers, taking notes, and sharing his insights with the attendees. This forum was his highlight moment in China. During his days and nights in Germany, he works 14 hours a day in clinical practice and spends 2 hours managing the second largest university hospital in Europe, from 6 am to 8 pm. He did not apply for a fellowship at the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina but he was invited. He who always thinks of others and the front-line employees before himself is a real gentleman in this world. Why does Heaven give us brilliant day and dazzling sight, yet not enough time to spend together? The green mountains remain unchanged, the clear waters continue to flow, and we meet again in Suzhou, China in October 2024.
